about
Sometimes it’s easy to forget exactly when and where a song was written. That’s not the case with “I’m Not Ready”. I (Matt) was getting ready to transition from a near 15-year long job to something new in late summer of 2021. COVID was still a heavy presence in the world. In the week between leaving the old job and getting ready to start the new one, my son and I both contracted COVID. Thankfully, the symptoms weren’t too severe aside from fatigue, headaches, and loss of smell and taste. We both individually isolated from the rest of the family. My son recovered quickly. It took me the full week plus to bounce back.
During all the time alone in the bedroom, I took to playing the first acoustic guitar I ever bought, an inexpensive, nylon string Eterna model. Over the course of a few days, picking it up when I had some free time and energy, I wrote the song. I was thinking about the isolation I was experiencing in the present moment, the way the world was suffering from unrest and pain in many various forms, and as the lyrics state, just trying to find some understanding but coming up empty handed.
After everything settled with quarantine, Tesia and I were able to work out the arrangement together, which we kept as just the single guitar, a few traded melody lines, and harmonies for the chorus and bridge. A highlight related to the song was playing it for the first time live, using that same cheap guitar, at Winterfolk Fest 2022 - curated and hosted by Harold Hensley - at Yellow Cab Tavern. We came down off the stage and sat in chairs at the same level just in front of a very attentive audience. It was a great experience and a great memory.
lyrics
I’m not ready
Not ready yet
I’m not ready for anybody else
To tell me something about who I am
To tell me something about anybody else
I’m searching for, searching for
Searching for some type of understanding
Coming up, coming up
Keep coming up empty handed
All regrets now have settled in
In what we have said
In what we might have been
What we’re afraid of
What we have held
What we have missed and
What missed us as we fell
I’m searching for, searching for
Searching for some type of understanding
Coming up, coming up
Keep coming up empty handed
I’m not ready
Not ready yet
I’m not ready for anybody else
When, when you coming home
When, when you coming home
I’m searching for, searching for
Searching for some type of understanding
Coming up, coming up
Keep coming up empty handed
Searching for, I’m searching for
I’m searching for some type of understanding
Coming up, coming up
Keep coming up empty handed
